Sutro Heights Park

Sutro Heights Park is where the Pacific Ocean meets the San Francisco Bay. The twenty fourth mayor of San Francisco, Adolph Sutro owned about a tenth of the property in the city during the late 19th century. He built the famous Sutro Baths, Sutro Heights Park and The Cliff House. The above photo depicts the gazebo located within the park area.

Near the main entrance you will find the above photographed stone ram sculpture. The park hosts various stone statues to include the lions situated at the main entrance to the park located at 48th Avenue and Point Lobos.

Adolph Sutro built the park for his own pleasure. This was basically his backyard park. He enjoyed walking through the exotic trees and flower gardens while picnicking and exercising. The stone sculptures were his babies.

There rests in the park a cornucopia of tree and plant species as well as colorful flower beds and lush foliage. From within the confines of the park you can get an aerial view of the Cliff House, Ocean Beach and the San Francisco Bay. The views on a clear day atop the park are spectacular.

This photo was taken at the park looking down upon the outer Richmond District, along the great highway and with the outer Sunset District in the distant background.

Although these sights are not your typical tourist attractions, they are definitely something you should experience. You can get to Sutro Heights park, The Cliff House and Ocean Beach in one day. There are also some good restaurants in that area which I will be writing about soon. For transportation inquiries please comment and I will get back to you.

How much I appreciate this site. I've lived in the Bay for 28 years and worked in San Francisco for five. I now live in New York and oh how I miss San Francisco so. I absolutely adore it. I sometimes search on line for pictures of the Bay when I get home sick, but your pictures capture the beauty of San Francisco that I long for. It brings me back to so many moments.

On a clear day, you're joking right? I didn't talk to anyone who said it ever got clear enough to see things. Interesting area still; but ...clear is not something we've seen in our 2 trips to this area; or one we've heard about from others.

Sandy, I've lived here all my life and have been to that park hundreds if not thousands of times. It is clear there many times and I have more photos which show the view from that park on this blog. 2 trips to the area does not constitute "knowing the area" I live here so I do know the area.

rainfield, I'm always relaxing, too much. :)

betchai, it is really cool going through those trees.

Charity, It's cute isn't it? It is a fixture there.

Thank you for sharing these beautiful images. Sutro Heights Park is one of the most beautiful, quiet parks in the city. And yes, having lived in SF many years of my life, I can say that it is clear and sunny there, more than not. The fog months are June - August, the rest of the year, even winter days, are spectacular in Sutro Heights PArk and the whole Point Lobos region. The park is a locals only type place, quiet and surprising once you you enter it. It's a treasure.
