Birds at the San Francisco Botanical Garden

White Crowned Sparrow Working at the garden was such a treat for me. I love immersing myself in nature and exploring everything the garden has to offer. As a young child we always had birds as pets. I learned so much just by observing their personalities and grew to love all bird life. The garden is home to many a bird species. We have red tailed hawks, red shouldered hawks, blue herons, white egrets, stellar jays, scrub jays, hummingbirds, white crowned sparrows, quail and so much more. A day does not go by that I don't see at least four to five different bird species. I've learned to recognize many just by hearing their unique songs. My favorite little bird is the white crowned sparrow. which is pictured above. They are native to North America and make their nests in shrubs and grasses. They mainly eat seeds and plants but also dine on insects. They are anywhere from 6 to eight inches long and can stay awake for two weeks while migrating. They would greet me each...

Wild Bird Wednesday #44

Black Crowned Heron taken at the San Francisco zoo. This medium sized heron is found all over the world and I was lucky enough to come across him sitting on a door fence post by the pelican exhibit at the San Francisco zoo.   These birds basically perch near water and wait to find their prey which is usually crustaceans, frogs and aquatic insects. These beautiful birds have nocturnal habits and are only seen early morning or in the evening but I saw him in the middle of the day just hanging out and enjoying the attention from visitors.  I am beginning to believe that the wildlife in San Francisco love posing for photographers :) He is a real beauty and I hope to see him again soon. Camera Critters #265 and Wild Bird Wednesday Meet Wilbur The Barn Owl

Photos Taken At The San Francisco Zoo Wilbur the Barn Owl Interesting Facts Meet My New Son Wilbur the Barn Owl My friend, Paula and I went to the zoo yesterday on residents free day so that I could introduce her to Wilbur.  Unfortunately he was not there but was in the SF Zoo Mobile entertaining school children around San Francisco. I went back today, Thursday in order to buy a membership to the zoo so that I could visit him whenever I want.  Every time I have seen him, he is always sleeping in his barn but today I was thrilled to see him outside playing, taking a bath and hanging out for his fans - and he has many. I found out a few new facts about him.  He is a picky eater and will only eat black mice.  He is also bothered by the beeping sounds that the zoo trucks make when they are backing up.  He is a homebody and loves his little blue barn, as do I. It was such a treat for me to see him so animated today.  He also will res...

Wild Bird Wednesday #28

I was visiting one of my favorite lakes, Metson Lake in Golden Gate Park last week.  It is a small lake with it's usual duck, seagull and geese residents.  I was walking the perimeter and happened to spot this heron across the lake hiding behind some tall grass.  So, I made my way over to him.  I didn't want to get too close because I didn't want to scare him.  I got about 20 feet away and started snapping photos. What was interesting is that he stood so still that for a minute I thought he wasn't even real :) then when I tried to get closer to him, he turned his head.  I have seen herons before but this one was just gorgeous and very tall. He just stood there gazing across the lake with his one foot up in his feathers.  I don't know that much about herons so I thought maybe he had an injury of some sort to his foot but someone told me that is how they rest. In any case, this was a real treat for me to see this beautiful bird.  I must h...
