Macro Monday - California Pitcher Plant

I was walking about near the nursery at the Botanical Gardens and saw this green color out of the corner of my eyes. As I got closer, the exotic nature of this plant mesmerized me. I knew nothing about it at the time and got very close to take some macro shots. Had I known at the time it was a carnivorous plant species, I would have taken the shots at a distance :D These were planted in a large planter box outside the nursery. From what I understand, they are supposed to have an unpleasant scent however I did not smell anything. Here is a link to the Wiki information page with some fascinating reading about this plant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darlingtonia_californica

Its kinda strange plant and by just looking at the picture, I may conclude that it doesn't smells good. :D Maybe its not on its full bloom on the day you saw it.

Anyway, thank you so much for always visiting my blog. Deep inside, I really appreciated every single comment you left in my blog. From the very start you are still my Top Commentator and I can say that "I owe you heaps!"

That is a fascinating plant. I was watching a program on tv one time that was all about carnivorous plants and this was one of the ones they showed.

Great macro shot! I wish I had a california pitcher plant but I do have some other pitcher plant species that are finally taking off (I got them as cuttings and baby plants)
I would love to be able to find one of these growing in its native habitat - I think they are such interesting plants to grow and study. Joanne great shots. I think you'll be back there again to take some more photos of it.

Cool macro shots Jo! The pitcher plant is our provincial flower - however, ours are more red than green... they grow wild here on the bogs. I think I'll go for a walk and find one to photograph!

Unusual plant and a good lesson for me today. I didn't know about it.

I had no idea they were carnivorous. After reading that your second shot reminded me of little green snake heads. :)
Cool post!

Thanks for your visit.

Something about these plants make you feel crawly and disgusted. You've captured both their interesting shapes and their creepiness.

I don't know why, but as soon as I saw the pictures I thought of danger. Then after another part of that first second I saw the title. You captured the nature of this plant very well. I really like carnivorous plants.
