Anniversary of the Sea Lions' Arrival @ Pier 39

First and foremost, I am thrilled to report that there are about a dozen sea lions as you can see in the above photo who have returned to the docks at Pier 39. Now that is quite short of the hundreds that have been there for 20 years but it's a good sign that they have returned. The wayward injured sea lion was found at Monterey Bay though due to weather conditions etc... it was too dangerous to chase the lion in order to care for him so he again got away. The mystery still remains as to where all the sea lions have gone but as of now, their anniversary party is still planned for the 15th. I do plan to be there to join in the festivities. Details below.

Anniversary of the Sea Lions' Arrival

Friday, January 15, 2010
10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
PIER 39 commemorates the 20
th anniversary of the sea lions’ arrival at PIER 39. Through the years, California sea lions have taken over PIER 39’s K-Dock to the delight of spectators. Each January, these marine mammals return in droves for herring season in San Francisco Bay. In celebration of the sea lion’s anniversary, visitors can watch the sea lions in close proximity, talk with knowledgeable Marine Mammal Center docents about these amazing animals and stop by the Whale Bus for a complete educational experience. PIER 39 invites visitors to see for themselves why K-Dock in PIER 39’s West Marina, has been declared a “Watchable Wildlife” viewing area by the California Watchable Wildlife Project.

Must be very loud and noisy out there! And they are indeed fascinating but dangerous as well. They not called Sea Lion for nothing

oh, a happy anniversary to the sea lions, Jo.
I am glad for the appreciation you have there for them. I find them cute, and though they may be noisy but I find their noise sweet and pure :)

Wow that would be awesome to see. We don't get anything like that around here.

The sea lions are fascinating to watch, from a distance. We see a lot of them on the Oregon Coast.

That's a sight I'd love to see in person.

When they were all out there it was very loud. You could hear them blocks away. I'm just glad that some have returned and I will hopefully have photos and video of their party for you :) Thank you all so much for visiting and commenting.

Hopefully they were just temporarily distracted by something. Maybe they'll all begin to make their way back now.

It was sad to see the injured seal on tv. I hope they can capture him/her to give him/her the required medical attention. Is it true they postponed the anniversary celebration?

Ratty, I certainly hope they do.

Karen, thank God you told me, I had no idea. I just checked the Pier 39 website and it has been postponed. Thanks so much.
When we were there two years ago, I saw a lot of sea lions on Pier 39! Good thing they found their way back. xoxo
