Today.com Deceptive Practices - In Adult Related Business

Well I had no idea I was going to be writing on this subject today. I went to my old blog on Today.com in order to find a photo that I had not saved to my computer and wanted to use for a post tomorrow. Long story short, I clicked on my blog link over at Today.com and what comes up? It re-directs to a page with adult related photos and links. I tried it three times and the same thing happened. I checked my other old blog and a few blog names that I remembered from the old days and the same thing happens. So, for all of you who had blogs at Today.com and are now exiled or left, your old url and pages are being re-directed to adult related sites. Over at the To Hell With Today.com blogspot at http://todayexiles.blogspot.com/2009/09/look-what-todaycom-did-now-this-is.html you will find a link to the Google spam report page where you can report Today.com for their deceptive and frankly disgusting practices. I've already reported them and hope Google takes this seriously.

What really angers me is that they are leaving these old blogs in their system in order to collect on the Google adsense and ads while trying to make even more money by re-directing all of our old blogs to adult related sites. The frustrating thing is that when a search is done, if one of our blogs shows up, the person searching will see these adult pages. How dare Today.com do that. I will not let them get away with these practices. They should be banned from doing business on the internet or elsewhere as far as I'm concerned. I'm in a fighting mood and they are on the other end of my boxing gloves.

Update-Sept. 16th. Today.com has corrected the problem and all the affected blogs are back to normal.

They keep sending me an email saying I have 60 points. I don't know what the points are for, I left as soon as I joined since the whole thing was stupid with all their rules. The porn thing makes me glad I took my page down a long time ago. Thanks for pointing this out.

I just checked both of my old ones, and they both redirected to something called celebrity frenzy. Sick.
Joanne Olivieri said…
Jen, I'm not sure what the points mean at all. I wish I had left sooner.

Laura, It's really sick and inexcusable.

Mine went to Celebrity Frenzy too. Grrrr.

One thing I did, with all my photos that I had linked to that were on Flickr, that were contained in posts that were closed so I couldn't delete them altogether, was to replace them in Flickr. I did up pages that said something like, "Today.com is attempting to make money off my photos without my permission."

So those are what show up if anyone does a search that lands them on any of those posts, that's what they see in the midst of the text.

Hope google really do so,ething about it. Glad that I didn't join Today (I almost did it) I pray that you won this fight Joanne.

Phyll, great idea. I didn't think too much at the time about saving anything there and I obviously should have.

Vanilla, Thanks and I'm glad you didn't join either. They were horrible to everyone and are still continuing that behavior. Besides your blog looks so much better than it ever would have with Today.com
This is really sick..Mine went to celebrity-frenzy also..and I also receive email about 60 points thingy in my account..I put all their emails in spam..

Thanks Jo for letting me know about this!

Icy, you're welcome. I just hope something can be done about it.

Thanks again, Jo, for letting us know.

Phyl -- great idea!

I just copied my whole blog into a text file on my hard drive in case they decide to throw the blogs out altogether. I found that if I hit "Stop" on my browser when the page first came up, I could prevent the overlay from loading, and then I could copy it with ctrl-C, ctrl-V.
Joanne Olivieri said…
Terri, I just tried it and it didn't work. Maybe I was too slow. I'll try it again. I just want them to take that re-direct out of there. Period.
Ms Terri said…
You have to be quick on the stop button. ;-) It's easier to do with Firefox than with IE.
Thanks Terri.

Susan, Exactly!

I'd say unbelievable but, hell, I believe it.

That could almost be criminal. You might well have
adolescents following some of your wonderful blogs, Jo, and, while I certainly don't want to get an adult site if I am not seeking it, children and teen absolutely should not. Isn't it horrible? I applaud you for battling today.com and hope you are successful in going after them.

Thanks to a poster on Associated Content, I found out about Today's latest sleazy trick. I checked one of my old blogs and sure enough, it was overlaid and had a porn link. I would like to follow the Exiles blog and comment now and the, but the particular form of Blogger's commenting that's in place makes it impossible. I use a Mac, and out of four different browsers that I've checked out none can handle that format. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to be able to comment. Would you or whoever owns the blog please consider changing to the non-embedded format for commenting?

Keep up the good work on outing Today. The word is getting around, but very slowly. That site needs to be taken down so that it can't keep pulling in naive bloggers.

Well I just checked my blogs and a few others. It seems they've been listening and corrected the problem. I will continuously be checking on this to make sure it does not happen again.

Thanks for all of your comments.

I'm glad it's not just me. They won't let me log in and yet they keep sending me emails reminding me to moderate my comments. I know they are collecting the adsense and I think it's pretty cheezy.

Way to stay diligent and speak up. If you don't speak up, they will assume you agree. Keep up the good fight.

They have a new pop-up that comes up now on the Exile sites. It's for a dating site called Passion Search, which is not as bad as the porn ads they had before, but is still tacky.

There is also something there which I don't know if it's new or if I just never noticed it before, but they put a link in the left-hand sidebars of the Exile blogs which says "Blogging Directory," which sounds very innocent, but clicking on the link triggers a pop-up which has a picture of a topless woman along with links to hard-core porn sites.

I wrote about both of these on the Today Exiles blog:

http://todayexiles.blogspot.com/2009/09/now-its-ad-for-passion-search.html

and http://todayexiles.blogspot.com/2009/09/oh-wait-i-found-another-one.html

At this point, I would just like them to take all of my posts down from their site, and I'm sure most of the other Exiles feel the same.

Terri,

I just checked everything out and found the same as you. They are up to their old tricks again. I'm going to see if there is anything that can legally be done to put a stop to their actions.
